Should you stay in Morzine?

Choose Morzine for a town-based ski holiday, with a choice between the Morzine–Les Gets slopes and the route towards Avoriaz. It is not one ski-in/ski-out station. The Pleney lift and Super Morzine lift lead in different directions, so the right address depends on which side you will use.

Morzine is particularly worth comparing when your group includes people who want restaurants, swimming or time in town as well as skiing. If the priority is stepping straight into a snow-covered, largely car-free resort, compare Avoriaz before booking.

Pleney and Les Gets versus Super Morzine and Avoriaz

Pleney is the town’s access point for the Morzine–Les Gets side. The local operator identifies Pleney, Nyon and Chamossière as its main sectors. The official maps distinguish this area from the wider Portes du Soleil network.

Super Morzine is the other principal direction from the village. It takes you towards the Avoriaz side rather than dropping you onto the Pleney slopes. A separate option is the Prodains Express cable car, reached by road from Morzine. The tourist office explains these alternatives in its ski-area access guide.

The consequence is simple: do not arrange a beginner lesson on Pleney while choosing accommodation solely because it is close to Super Morzine. Both may be described as central lifts, but they are not two entrances to the same nursery slope.

How do you change between the two sides?

Changing sides involves the village, not a piste running directly across it. Plan a walk or local shuttle between lift bases, or use the road connection to Prodains for an Avoriaz outing. The official bus and shuttle page carries the seasonal network information and timetable links.

Do not use a summer timetable or last winter’s final departure as a promise for your travel week. For a mixed group, it is often easier to choose one side for the day and meet back in town. Trying to move everyone between sectors at lunchtime adds equipment handling and transport to what could otherwise be a relaxed break.

Where do beginners ski in Morzine?

Start by investigating Pleney or Nyon, not the size of the entire Portes du Soleil. The tourist office identifies both as learner areas and lists special beginner passes. The Pleney learning facilities include carpet lifts near the top of the gondola, described in the resort’s beginner-area improvement information.

That creates a useful first-day plan: choose a school teaching on the required side, confirm whether the meeting point is at the bottom or top, then allow for the gondola journey. The official lesson directory lists schools and independent instructors. A lesson sold as “Morzine” should still have an exact meeting point on the confirmation.

Ask about the descent at the end of the session as well. A learner may need to download rather than ski a valley return. Buying a larger pass does not make that return run easier.

Where should you stay in the village?

Near Pleney: the most logical starting point when lessons and most skiing will be on the local Morzine–Les Gets side. Compare the actual walking route to the gondola and the ski-hire shop, especially when carrying children’s equipment.

Near Super Morzine: investigate this end of the centre when most of the party will head towards Avoriaz. It is a different accommodation search from being near Pleney, even though both give access to town facilities.

Along the road towards Les Prodains: consider it for repeated use of Prodains Express, but treat evening access to Morzine as a separate transport question. A convenient mountain gateway is not the same as being able to stroll out into the town centre.

Use the resort and ski-map resources alongside the shuttle network. These recommendations are based on lift access, not a claim that every property within a named area is quiet, slopeside or equally convenient.

Is Morzine ski-in/ski-out?

Not as a general description of the town. Morzine has ordinary roads and accommodation spread around its lift bases. A particular slopeside property may offer ski access, but a town-centre address does not establish that you can ski home from Avoriaz or Pleney.

Before paying extra for the label, identify the return piste, its difficulty and the alternative route when it is closed. For a beginner, an easy walk to the correct lift can be more useful than a ski-in/ski-out claim attached to a run they cannot use. The contrast with Avoriaz is about the whole daily routine, not simply which resort has the larger ski-area figure.

Which lift pass should you buy?

Distinguish Morzine–Les Gets, Avoriaz and Portes du Soleil products. The official pass guide explains the available areas and links to their booking systems. The local Morzine–Les Gets product should not be assumed to cover a day on Avoriaz’s lifts.

For a first-time skier, ask whether the school recommends a restricted beginner ticket. For an experienced group intending to ski both sides and farther afield, compare the wider coverage. Price the pass for the same dates, age band and duration as the alternative; a headline day rate and an advance-purchase six-day price are not like-for-like comparisons.

What can non-skiers actually do?

The Aquatic Centre and Le Rex cinema give you alternatives that do not depend on ski lifts opening. The tourist office’s indoor-activity directory links to both, and also lists the Mechanical Music Museum in nearby Les Gets. The museum is a separate journey, not an attraction in central Morzine.

For mountain views or a meeting with skiing friends, investigate a pedestrian lift ticket. The published product names specific eligible lifts; it does not grant pedestrian use of every chairlift or a safe walking route across ski pistes. A meeting near a gondola arrival is easier to plan than a restaurant reached only by skiing.

Getting to Morzine from Britain

Geneva is a useful airport gateway; Thonon-les-Bains and Cluses are useful rail-and-coach interchanges. The official transport page identifies Y91 from Thonon and Y92 from Cluses, with timetable and booking resources. Use the actual coach connections when testing an itinerary.

A flight to Geneva still needs an onward transfer booking. Compare arrival times with the coach or shared-transfer schedule before booking the flight, and specify your accommodation rather than just “Morzine”. For a family, a confirmed drop-off near the right lift can be more valuable than a slightly cheaper transfer ending elsewhere in town.

When do the Morzine and Avoriaz seasons run?

The tourist office currently lists 19 December 2026–4 April 2027 for Morzine’s Pleney and Nyon–Chamossière sectors, and 11 December 2026–18 April 2027 for Avoriaz. Those are planned dates, not guaranteed daily opening. See the official season information.

This matters at either end of winter: accommodation in Morzine can be available when the local slopes are not scheduled to operate. A trip relying on Avoriaz should include the appropriate access route and pass rather than assuming Pleney will also be open.

Frequently asked questions

Can you ski from Pleney straight to Super Morzine?

No. They are different lift directions, with a village transfer between them. Choose the day’s sector deliberately instead of treating the town as one connected snow front.

Is Morzine or Avoriaz better for a family?

Morzine suits a town-based stay with local learning areas and off-slope facilities. Avoriaz offers a higher, largely pedestrian mountain base. The actual school meeting point and arrival arrangements should decide the choice.

Does a Morzine–Les Gets pass cover all of Portes du Soleil?

No. Check the named coverage of the product you buy. The wider domain and Avoriaz have different pass options.
