Which part of Andorra should you ski?
Choose Grandvalira for a holiday built around its linked sectors; Pal Arinsal for a separate two-sector mountain with village access from La Massana or Arinsal; or Ordino Arcalís for a mountain-focused trip with a road journey to the ski base. These are three different areas. A pass that includes more than one does not let you ski continuously between all of them.
Within Grandvalira, Soldeu and Pas de la Casa also make different bases. The lesson location, evening plans and airport connection should decide the accommodation choice, not the country’s small size on a map.
Operator maps, school conditions and travel resources reviewed on 22 October 2026. Prices and access depend on the selected 2026–27 product and dates.
Grandvalira: choose the village and sector together
Soldeu is a useful starting point for a mixed-ability group using the Espiolets teaching area. The village-gondola routine needs to fit the morning lesson, while stronger skiers can explore farther. Our Soldeu guide explains the school programmes, pass restrictions and actual accommodation-access questions.
Pas de la Casa is a different proposition at the French-border end of the domain. The local snow front, town shops and livelier atmosphere can suit sociable groups. The Pas guide explains the Abelletes learner facilities and the first connection towards Grau Roig.
El Tarter, Canillo and Encamp provide other access choices. Use the official Grandvalira map to locate the actual entry point and the live connection report for the day. A hotel sold under Grandvalira is not necessarily in the same village as your school.
Pal Arinsal: two sectors, with different learning bases
Pal and Arinsal are joined by cable car, with access from La Massana and Arinsal village. The operator’s map is the correct resource, not a Grandvalira piste diagram.
For a family, the school location provides a more useful comparison than a generic beginner-friendly label. The Snow Garden information identifies La Caubella in Pal and Comallemple in Arinsal. Choose the accommodation and access route around the programme you book.
Best fit: a party that finds a suitable course and property on one of those two access sides. Compromise: changing sectors still depends on the connecting lift and your return plan. A learner’s convenient morning in Pal does not automatically make a late-afternoon meeting in Arinsal straightforward.
Ordino Arcalís: do not confuse the town with the ski base
Ordino village is not the snow front of Arcalís. The operator’s arrival guide identifies the mountain access, parking and bus resources. Staying in the valley requires a daily journey to the facilities you intend to use.
It is also inaccurate to dismiss Arcalís as only an experts’ destination. Its children’s school information identifies Planells as the Snow Garden meeting area and distinguishes nursery care from skiing programmes. That gives families a real place and service to assess.
Best fit: visitors who deliberately want this mountain and accept the road-access routine. Compromise: a pretty valley hotel does not remove the school drop-off journey. Check that the bus or booked transport works for the confirmed course times.
Which lift pass covers which area?
Read the product conditions rather than assuming every Andorra ticket covers all three mountains. Grandvalira’s current day and multi-day page specifically says passes for two or more consecutive days also provide access to Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís. It uses dynamic pricing, so select the actual dates and age category.
Season products are a different purchase. The Andorra Pass and Nord Pass have different coverage and benefits. A season-pass promotion should not be quoted as the price of a six-day holiday.
Even when the ticket permits visits to several areas, the transfer remains a road journey. For a short stay, concentrating on the mountain beside the booked school can make more sense than trying to use every entitlement.
What should beginners check before buying lessons?
The cheapest restricted beginner ticket may not be accepted for the selected school product. The Grandvalira lesson conditions and Pal Arinsal school information distinguish qualifying passes from beginner and pedestrian products.
Ask the provider for the course’s sector, start day, meeting point and required ticket before booking. A half-day learning session, a multi-day group course and a children’s full-day programme can have different inclusions. Equipment and lunch should be counted only when the selected product explicitly includes them.
This is especially important on a short break. Some group courses have fixed starting days, so an inexpensive Tuesday flight may not fit the course the family expects to join.
How do you get to Andorra from the UK?
Barcelona and Toulouse are practical flight-and-coach gateways to investigate. Andbus publishes its timetable and booking search; the resort operators’ access pages link additional services. Compare the complete flight and bus itinerary, not just the airfare.
The destination on the coach ticket matters. A service to Andorra la Vella bus station does not automatically include a transfer to Soldeu, Pas de la Casa, Arinsal or the Arcalís base. Obtain the onward connection or property drop-off in writing.
For Pal Arinsal, the official access guide locates the La Massana and Arinsal approaches. For a road journey, use Mobilitat for current traffic and border information. An old transfer-time estimate is not a guarantee in winter.
Where should a mixed group stay?
Choose the least flexible daily activity first. A child’s fixed school meeting time is harder to move than an experienced skier’s preferred first lift. Put the accommodation near that activity, then plan the stronger skiers’ route separately.
For Soldeu, that may mean prioritising the village gondola; for Pas, the selected snow-front meeting point; for Pal or Arinsal, the correct sector’s school access; for Arcalís, a dependable road journey to Planells. There is no single country-wide answer to “near the lifts”.
For non-skiers, decide whether they want mountain sightseeing, activities near the village or days in the capital. Those plans can create additional transport costs. Use the non-skier comparison when the off-slope itinerary is a major part of the holiday.
When is the 2026–27 winter season?
The current resort-group information gives a planned period of 4 December 2026–4 April 2027, subject to snow and weather. Use the individual operator’s calendar and daily report for the actual area: Grandvalira’s calendar is not proof that every learning facility or inter-sector connection is open throughout.
For an early or late family trip, verify the specific school and nursery operation. For a group touring the wider area, look at the required connections. A season pass being valid is not the same as all terrain being available.
Frequently asked questions
Can you ski between all three Andorran ski areas?
No. Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís are separate. A ticket covering several areas still requires road travel between them.
Is Arinsal part of Grandvalira’s linked pistes?
No. It forms part of Pal Arinsal. Use that operator’s map and the school arrangements for the correct sector.
Does staying in Ordino put you beside Arcalís lessons?
No. The town and mountain school base are separate locations. Plan the journey to the meeting point named on the booking.
